The 2019-20 season is the first in the modern era and marks the first time the NHL has not played in Toronto.

The league’s first NHL World Cup will be played in Detroit on April 12, 2020.
The 2020-21 season will be the third of the NHL franchise’s 30-year-history and marks an NHL record.

The 2019-2020 season will also be the first World Championship of the new NHL-owned arena at the Palace of Auburn Hills in downtown Detroit.
The arena is slated to be ready for the start of the 2022-23 season.
The 2022-20 campaign will be in Toronto on April 11-12, 2022.
The event will mark the first appearance of the National Hockey League-owned Maple Leafs at the NHL arena.
The Leafs will be accompanied by a professional hockey team and will play three exhibition games.
